One doesn’t come across albums like ’Approaching’ too often. In fact, the latest Finnish record in this discipline is Edward Vesala’s timeless manifesto ’I’m here’ from three decades ago. So one might even say that it was about time a percussionist from Finland made a solo album that’s based on uninhibited self-expression. |
|
|
|
For this task there really is no better man than Janne Tuomi. A former apprentice of Vesala’s, an avid admirer of Milford Graves and Elvin Jones and a student of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, he has a deep understanding of the power and possibilities of the oldest instrument in the world. |
|
|
|
Janne Tuomi was born in 1973 in Tampere, incidentally the year Vesala’s ’I’m here’ was released. Coming from a family of musicians and music educators, it was only natural that this first-born began playing the piano at the age of six. But the infatuation was not to last as percussion soon lured him away from the ebonies and ivories. |

Tuomi commenced studying at the Conservatory of Tampere in 1995 and further honed his skills at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark. After undertaking a study trip to New York City, Tuomi graduated from the Conservatory in 2000 with honours. In 2001 he travelled to Los Angeles to take private lessons. In 2006 Tuomi did his diploma recital as part of Tampere Biennale contemporary music festival, again with honours. |

During his professional career Tuomi has acted as a free jazz drummer, classical percussonist and everything in between. He has performed with guitarists Antti Kotikoski, Sakari Luoma and Marzi Nyman, saxophonists Daunik Lazro, Jone Takamäki and Jorma Tapio, pianists Iro Haarla and Seppo Kantonen, bass players Ulf Krokfors, Sampo Lassila and Claude Tchamitchian and numerous others. |

In recent times Tuomi has taken part in productions by the Balanescu Quartet and John Zorn’s ’Finnish Cobra’ . Jazz and classical aside, the percussionist works with groups like Slobo Horo and Vilddas that specialize in world music. He is also the percussionist of choice for the new duo project of Mika Rättö and Jussi Lehtisalo, the masterminds behind renowned trance rock group Circle. |

Apart from recording and performing various styles of music with a burning passion, Tuomi teaches percussion both privately and at the Palmgren Conservatory in Pori. He is also experienced as a theater musician. To top it all, he has put his skills as a trombonist to good use on e.g. actor/musician Markku Peltola’s 2003 album ’Buster Keatonin ratsutilalla’. |

Kokeiltuaan musiikkiopintojensa aluksi useampiakin eri soittimia muusikkoperheen vesa Janne Tuomi siirtyi lopulta lyömäsoitinopintoihin Tampereen konservatorion musiikkiopistoon Esko Vuorisen oppilaaksi. Ammattiopintoihin hän jatkoi 1995, ja opintojen tässä vaiheessa sivusoittimeksi tuli pasuuna. Vuoden 1998 Tuomi opiskeli Tanskassa Carl Nielsen -musiikkiakatemiassa lyömäsoitinten ja pasuunan soittoa sekä sävellystä Søren Monradin johdolla. Palattuaan kotimaahan hän suoritti Tampereen konservatoriossa vuonna 2000 lyömäsoitinten B-kurssitutkinnon parhain mahdollisin arvosanoin. Lyömäsoittimien diplomiresitaalikonsertin Tuomi piti vuonna 2006 osana Tampere Biennale nykymusiikkifestivaalia. |

Janne Tuomella on esiintymiskokemusta lukuisista jazz-, pop- ja rockyhtyeistä sekä improvisoidun musiikin, etnisen musiikin ja kamarimusiikin kokoonpanoista. Tällä hetkellä hän työskentelee avant-rockyhtye Circlessä, näyttelijä-muusikko Markku Peltolan orkesterissa, maailmanmusiikkia tulkitsevassa Slobo Horo -orkesterissa, improvisaatiokollektiiveissa Suurin Onni ja My Point of You sekä klassista lyömäsoitinmusiikkia esittävässä Osuma Ensembe -yhtyeessä. |

Tuomi on esiintynyt lukuisten suomalaisten ja ulkomaalaisten huippumuusikoiden kanssa, joista voidaan mainita esimerkiksi Alexander Balanescu, John Zorn, Jone Takamäki, Jorma Tapio, Iro Haarla, Seppo Kantonen, Sampo Lassila, Ulf Krokfors ja Marzi Nyman. Hän on soittanut lisäksi muun muassa Tampereen, Porin, Oulun, Odensen, Kuopion ja Joensuun kaupunginorkestereissa, Tampere Big Bandissa ja Tampere Chamber -kamariorkesterissa sekä Tampereen Työväen Teatterissa. |

Janne Tuomi opettaa Porin Palmgren-konservatoriossa sekä klassisia että pop/jazz-lyömäsoittimia. Monipuolisena freelance-muusikkona hän on usein esittänyt konserteissaan myös omia sävellyksiään, joista osa on rumpusooloja. Hänen soololevynsä Approaching ilmestyi elokuussa 2004. |
